Dry eye disease is a condition that affects the QUANTITY and QUALITY of your tears prohibiting them from keeping your eyes moist, healthy and comfortable.
-Red eyes
-Itchy eyes
-Stingy eyes
-Gritty eyes
-Teary eyes
-Fluctuating vision
The oil-secreting glands in our lids called Meibomian glands are responsible for slowing down the evaporation of our protective tear layer. When these glands become inflamed and blocked (Meibomian gland dysfunction-MGD), we suffer from evaporative dry eye disease. This accounts for more than 80% of all dry eye cases in Canada.
Some triggers of Dry Eye Disease include hormonal changes, increased screen time, over-wear of contact lenses, certain medications, auto-immune diseases, exposure to dusty and windy environments, demodex mites, refractive surgery and the list goes on.
By performing a thorough dry eye assessment using the newest technologies, we can determine what type of dry eye disease you have and how extensive it is. From here an individualized treatment plan is implemented for more effective outcomes.
Mild MGD treatments require at home care, such as eye drops, warm compresses and quality Omega-3 supplements.
Moderate to Advanced cases require a multi-modal in-office approach. We are happy to announce the acquisition of innovative treatment modalities;
The Icon IPL system and TempSure RF system.
These modalities treat the underlying causes of dry eyes, rather than just the symptoms.
Radiofrequency (RF) treatment uses energy waves to heat your eyelids and soften the oil that is clogging the Meibomian glands. The consistent pressure of the applicator movement allows for easy expression of the glands as well.
The treatment requires no down time and is done right here at the King Ocular Hygiene Studio.
IPL is a light based treatment that has 2 major benefits in dry eye treatment.
1. It removes obstruction by heating and recharging the cells in the Meibomian glands.
2. It decreases inflammation by alleviating the abnormal blood vessels found along the lid margins, in patients with rosacea, chronic redness and irritation.
